Atmanirbhar Bharat in Action: DHRUV64 Takes Center Stage

India has achieved a major milestone in technology with the launch of DHRUV64. It is the country’s first fully indigenous 1.0 GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor.

The chip has been designed and developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the government’s Microprocessor Development Programme. It uses open-source RISC-V technology, which means India does not have to pay royalties for the original design or rely on foreign companies like Intel or ARM.

DHRUV64 runs at 1 GHz and has two cores, which makes it efficient at handling multiple tasks simultaneously. It is built on 28nm process technology. Experts say it is not for smartphones or laptops, but for critical areas like embedded systems. These include 5G networks, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, automotive systems, defence equipment and critical infrastructure.

This launch is a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). For years, India has been importing most of its chips from other countries. Now, with DHRUV64, the nation can create secure and independent technology by reducing the risk of foreign dependency.

The government sees this as the beginning of a strong indigenous processor family. It will help startups, researchers and industries to create their own solutions. Many have called it a proud moment for India’s semiconductor journey, showing that the country can design advanced hardware on its own.
