Massive Earthquakes Hit Venezuela, Causing Widespread Damage
Strongest Tremors in over 100 Years Leave Thousands Injured and Many Homes Ruined
On June 24, 2026, a very big and dangerous earthquake hit Venezuela. It was the strongest earthquake the country has seen in over 100 years. The ground shook twice, very hard, within less than a minute. The shaking lasted for about two minutes and was felt across many cities, including the capital city, Caracas, and the nearby coast.
The powerful shaking caused many buildings to fall down. Apartment buildings, schools, and hospitals turned into piles of broken concrete. Sadly, more than 1,700 people have died, and over 5,000 people are hurt. Many others are still missing under the broken buildings. Government reports say that around 60,000 homes and buildings were damaged or ruined, leaving over 70,000 families without a place to live.
The situation grew worse because smaller earthquakes, called aftershocks, kept shaking the ground. These smaller shakes caused dangerous landslides on the hills and scared people so much that they chose to sleep outside on the streets. The earthquake also cut off electricity and telephone lines, making it very hard for people to call for help or talk to their families.

Right now, the government has declared an emergency. Rescue workers from Venezuela and other countries are working day and night to dig through the broken buildings to find survivors. At the same time, relief groups are trying hard to bring clean water, food, medicine, and tents to the families who lost everything. It is a very difficult time for the country, and the rescue work is still going on.
